@dansup there should be some other criteria than "popular" -- only suggesting accounts with a lot of followers tends to lead to big ones getting bigger which is not good

@dansup i think tumblr should lean harder into indieweb stuff than into activitypub tbh -- i feel like using activitypub for microblogging is not exactly ideal. i look at things such as "rss to activitypub" bots as kind of misguided because you should just be able to follow the rss feed. activitypub should be about delivering notifications and user activity. consider how Announce works, and then think about how it doesn't map onto tumblr, but microformats u-repost-of works fine up the chain...

@dansup @Elucidating @liaizon hmm, it's supposed to just be "unicode upper right arrow" to indicate an external link. i can try replacing it with an svg or something if it's not loading in all fonts though

@darius @evan @jesse yeah that tracks
i think the least you could do is like, "load more" on request so you don't get flooded with like 10,000 replies or whatever if a remote server decides to respond with the full replies collection
i wish collections were paginated consistently though, there's a topic i made exploring that https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/stricter-specifications-for-pagination-of-collections-and-orderedcollections/2633

@humanetech arguably the moment you saw it is "the present"; though the boundary is not well-defined, it is certainly there, somewhere

@Gargron well it's still not exactly mesh either. i'd think "showcase" style cases like that would want you to put the fans on the side and on the top (intake from behind the radiator, exhaust out the top and back). but i suppose those cases are meant to look better than they actually operate

question mainly to proponents of quote posts, but anyone can respond:
what would you say is the semantic relationship between a “quote post” and “the post being quoted”?
Are there any semantics at all, or is it a generic link/reference? What’s the difference between a “quote” and a “link preview”?
By semantic, I mean “meaning”. What does it mean to “quote” something?
If “quote posts” never existed, how would you design an equivalent?
EDIT: got plenty responses! see downthread for conclusion

@darius yeah, this is complicated by every fedi thing being its own web browser :( and this is on top of it also being its own mail server... it just ends up doing both poorly.

idk where to really put this (might turn into a blog post later or something). it's what you might call a "hot take", certainly a heterodox one to some parts of the broader #fediverse community. this is in response to recent discussion on "what do you want to see from AP/AS2 specs" (in context of wg rechartering) mostly devolving into people complaining about JSON-LD and extensibility, some even about namespacing in general (there was a suggestion to use UUID vocab terms. i'm not joking)

@darius @erincandescent It’s all just email subscriptions in my head, lol. Like in Github you can choose to be notified of comments, forks, etc. as you please. If LastFM added support for email notifications any time a friend scrobbled anything, and you subbed to that, well… hey, it’s your inbox, right?

This is why we need to allow people to specifically follow certain Collections which are exposed as streams. It’s also why we need to allow people to send activities to arbitrary audiences which might not include all followers.
If a relay is set up for the purpose of aggregating Listen activities and you follow it, that’s on you. You asked for it.
Create is the exception, not the rule

@dansup @jakob i’m closing issues that cannot be reproduced, ask for deployment help, are duplicates, etc… any issue that is still valid i am either consolidating or tagging with labels. if i made a mistake on anything please comment on the issue and i’ll take a second look — mistakes can happen occasionally when you deal with hundreds of issues!
