@feditips rainbow theme has been ruined unfortunately. when I was kid it was just a pretty and innocent thing. maybe meant hope or dreams. but in recent years its been adopted to mean certain very specific sexual and political things. which are not as wholesome or as easy to accept for everybody, let alone SFW

@searls yeah I'm the author of a latency instrum lib. one of the reasons I made it was cuz didnt like relying on the metrics provided by an external/hands-off profiler. because just knowing "how long a function takes" is too coarse/noisy. latency depends on precise code path followed, & various context factors. there are variants in each flow, depending on if conditions like u said, switches, errors, exceptions, panics, lock contention, remote service delays etc. all effect metrucs & outcome

@darius yeah I'm writing a piece on sw perf & scalability, and I have a section about that issue. the phenom where devs & 1st worlders can get spoiled and blinded to some perf issues, and so not understand what the UX is like for folks using older/slower kit or pipes
