@darius I assume this would break the "simplified federation" Firefox add-on I've been using: github.com/rugk/mastodon-simpl

It works well, but having to install software to follow people may be a non-starter for most.

@darius @b0rk Yeah I haven't seen 1 or 2 in maybe decades but I see 3 and 4 relatively frequently. For me it usually has something to do with either launching a GUI program like Firefox from the terminal and having its error messages take over, or pasting some large multi-line piece of text (usually by accident).

@dansup I'm really glad that you're working on making this feature standardized rather than some sort of Pixelfed exclusive, that's the fedi spirit!

I have some concerns about safety, though. What if people want to use starter packs as harassment lists? Can we let people opt out of them, and have visibility about what starter packs they've been added to? mastodon.social/@_elena/112693

@dansup Any anti-spam measures Facebook have are cancelled out by allowing advertisers to bribe them to deliver spam.

@dansup I don't think it's necessarily easy to say you're blocking Threads. Some portion of your fedi community is going to disagree with that decision, if your server serves more than a handful of people. And beyond that, clearly most of our friends and family also disagree, otherwise they wouldn't be using Facebook products. Blocking Threads is a brave and difficult stance that only sounds popular in a weird bubble.

It's also not easy to organize a community, no matter your stance on Threads.

@darius Damn, that's a long time to build hype for WA-64. Something to look forward to, at least.

@darius They can't just call it WA-64, c'mon, when does it get a fun name?

@dansup Do you have any sense of how this compares to other Fediverse projects, such as Mastodon? I recognize the use cases are different and hard to compare directly, but I'm just curious.

@feditips I'm slightly confused as to how the FediBuzz relay(s) work. I subscribed our server to the "philly" tag, and then made a post using the philly tag. My own post was then boosted into my timeline by FediBuzz.

I don't think normal relays work this way, do they? Why is FediBuzz boosting stuff? Seems a little noisy.

@dansup @liaizon @pixelfed The simple fix I think we're proposing is, instead of showing a list, just default to a random server from the list, instead of the one "flagship".

@dansup @liaizon @pixelfed But you mentioned "issues people have with outdated or broken instances", and that doesn't seem to be addressed by the policies in these screenshots.

If that's the main reason you're considering one default instance instead of a round robin of default instances, then perhaps you could add some pace of updating software to the pledge? Or you could do some additional curation if you receive reports an instance is broken?

Please don't centralize any further.

@dansup Why not start with the business account flag and see how it goes? You could always try the nuclear option next if that doesn't work.

Seems to me that instances could have different policies w/r/t the business account flag, with some welcoming business, others hiding it, and still others choosing some moderate limitations. That choice seems in the spirit of the Fediverse.

@darius @gleemie I know nothing to the detriment of Plausible, they seem fine.

But I have personally used GoatCounter, I liked their aesthetic better. goatcounter.com/

One quirk relevant if you happen to be working in the EU is GoatCounter is licensed under the EUPL. I don't necessarily agree with the author's licensing decision, but since it's designed for EU law and has official translations, seems a strong choice there: arp242.net/license.html
