@Gargron a 'show context in feed' checkbox option on replies might work? So that when I reply to a message, people can see the replied toot in their feeds, which they can override on a per user basis. I would go for opt out, because opt in might make for awkward reading if writers assume people will have context.

@Mastodon Centralizing new signups onto mastodon.social by default could create a problem long-term. I worry that you guys won't be able to handle the moderation load, and that it makes the ecosystem vulnerable to purchase by a bad actor.

New people should have the option of being randomly assigned from a curated list by default, determined by locale (eg Canadians get send to social.coop or mstdn.ca). Promote mastodon.social as a secondary option from their app, sure.
