@darius In addition to the concept being a hack the admin of seems to lack appreciation for data privacy law, especially in the EU. The "ask forgiveness after instead of permission before" attitude to privacy and consent I have seen so far raises red flags for me. I also dislike the use of CloudFlare services in hosting this directory of information.

I would suggest to recent Twitter migrants to avoid participation in fedifed in any capacity. There are better ways to find and verify people than this...thing.

@Gargron if you are spending time online "growing your network" primarily for the sake of having a large network then you are doing social media wrong TBH

@darius OK the whole vibe I get from this Post article is the problem is Seth, not Mastodon/fediverse...he just doesn't quite realize it yet.

@darius I suspect there is a bit of "instance churn" that contributes to this as well...

By that I mean new people who signed up for a big/general-purpose/well-publicized instance find it too slow, or has the wrong vibe or whatever decide to move instances (maybe the smaller surge back in April are now moving over during this surge? Or jsut new people instance-hopping?).

I know that instance moves can cause a brief blast of ActivityPub transactions and thus sidekiq jobs, and perhaps there are enough happening out there to make a significant contribution.

@dansup Nice to see @pixelfed support federated authentication!

I used a plugin on my server to do the same thing, so I can log on there with my credentials. Perhaps it is finally time to spin up a pixelfed with a similar setup :blobthinkingcool:

I hope this sort of thing (eventually supporting any IDp) becomes a standard feature of all fediverse apps...it would be fantastic for onboarding!

@dansup I didn't think you would TBH. Gotta say though Meta reaching out or responding is mire concerning than promising.

I am not strident in my views on blocking "Threads" or whatever...same moderation policies will largely apply as to other large instances (given their track record they will probably get silenced here fairly quickly lol) but Meta is trying to do to AP what Google did to XMPP...contain it away from mainstream use...and all interactions with them (including federating with them) have to be made in this context in mind.
