@darius I tell students, there are some problem domains in this field where you have only two choices: you either dedicate your life to this problem, or you exclusively use tools created by people who have dedicated their lives to this problem. Every other approach is a short road to madness.

@darius @jesse @danhon the people on the stream can try their best and their audience can believe in them, it’s a straightforward division of labor but I think it will work

@darius @th Macs have never cared. It's kind of embarassing that other operating systems still do tbh.

Naming things might be hard but it sure doesn't help that so many of our tools are trapped in the 70s in so many ways.

Human: "... and often our devices fail catastrophically and unrepairably when they come in contact with a few drops of water."

Visiting alien creature: "Forgive me, many apologies, fault of miscomprehension must be entirely my own, I had understood that you are 70% water."

Human: "Yes, why do you mention it?"

@darius @jdp23 can we figure out how to have it slowly, incrementally appear like progressive JPEGs back in the day

@darius once you’ve learned that “gmt +14:30” is real it’s sort of inescapable.

This QR code going to a dead wordpress site is a lesson of a particular flavour, I think.

Book’s good though.

Look, people choosing bluesky, likely knowing full well that it will eventually go bad and they’ll need to relocate again… we can scold people like that for choosing a precarious VC backed service, or maybe we can recognize that in the social media space that some people are … migrants.

Maybe we should ask ourselves what Bluesky offers now, in the near term, that’s compelling to people who might not enjoy the luxury of a long term, and ask what their choices say about us in the process.

There was a lot of news the other day about passkeys and portability - fidoalliance.org/fido-alliance - that says in part:

"Until now, there has been no standard for the secure movement of credentials, and often the movement of passwords or other credentials has been done in the clear."

This is true, but... there is also still no standard for any of that. The specs are mostly empty placeholders.

Solid Mitch Hedberg energy here.

While I'm in here wishing for things in video games: it would be pretty incredible if the various city-builder and environment-builder games out there came with an "export as asset" option.

I mean, large or small! Tropico, Cities-Skylines, Tiny Glade... I'd love to be able to take what I've built in one game and turn it into the landscape, environment or backdrop of a different game.

@darius I'd say not sweet, but with a richer, smooth taste, and if you time it right it comes out in cloves that still hold their shape but mash easily. I'll use them as a pizza topping, they're a welcome addition to anywhere that a cheese and a mustard might join forces, and any recipe that calls for raw garlic benefits from adding an equal portion of slow-cooked alongside it.

@darius @lmorchard What I really want to accomplish there is for more devs to know that they have permission to say that and hold to it.

Answers to my yesterday "is there a Linux equivalent to Notepad++, preferably console based, an extremely simple-on-the-surface lets you have many files open at a time and can be killed at any moment and reopened without data loss" have been interesting!

The wished-for TUI answer doesn't exist, but the most interesting answers were:

- Notepad Next
- the Gnome Text Editor

Geany was also proposed, new to me and much heavier, but worth looking at.
