The thing I love about this post and all its replies, is the stark difference in replies in answer to Brent's very reasonable question.
Some folks:
* It's the starter packs / easier onboarding!
Other folks:
[I'll let you read those replies]

If you think it's the starter packs / easier onboarding, then that leads you to want easier onboarding for Mastodon👍🏿
If you think it's a character flaw or moral failing in people that choose BlueSky, that leads to doing nothing🤷🏿♂️

Rather than talk in the abstract about whether consensus blocklists are good or bad, let's consider a specific example.
Let's suppose Georgia Tech wants to join the Fediverse. They want to start an instance at social.gatech.edu. ♥️
Georgia Tech has a student body of about 47K students. This includes the largest number of women engineering students in the US, and one of the largest Black engineering student bodies on Earth.
How does GT protect their students without consensus block lists?

If algorithmically increasing the political division and rage on social grew revenue the most, then 4chan would be the highest revenue generator. It's not.
The most engaging content is *fun content*. By far. It's not close.

This is not saying that algorithmic content is good for you, or that growth at all costs is good for society (or even sustainable).
But please, stop trying to say that politically divisive content is the most engaging. It absolutely is not.
