This thread (on threadiverse) reminiscing about 2000s era internet made me think:

A paradox with the current :

it's driven, partly, by nostalgia and longing for the "early internet".

And yet, is built in imitation of modern big-social.

I was struck by the thought "does the fedi capture any of these structures, feelings and vibes?"
I don't think so, at all.

The fedi is balkanised big-social, not new-old-internet, and you can feel it, there's unmet longing.

@feditips @manyver_se

Intuitively, an architecture that flexibly brings together users, through centralising services like these "Room servers", with such users being otherwise independent, single-user entities that own their data, hosting, identity etc ... seems to be "the way".

@dansup more of a follow up question…

Are such semi-centralising hubs inevitable as tools for smoothing over the UX issues of decentralisation?

I’m personally betting yes.

@dansup

I'm sure there's a good reason for this, whose ever fault it is ... but they're exactly the same instance.

@ernest can maybe clarify, or if necessary, "fix" things?

@dansup is bet a simple statistical approach could go a long way.

MAU/total user ratio would reveal a lot of the outliers I suspect. Especially if there are quick changes to this ratio over a day or week or so.

@dansup Hope you're doing well mate!

I can only imagine some of the complete rubbish that was thrown at you. From what I can see ... you're doing awesome work that many many people use, benefit from and cherish!

Hope you have a good time. Fuck the dickheads!

@feditips @tea

So, for everyone loving this idea and feature (which is fair, it's awesome), please keep the following in mind:

a.gup.pe (which provides the features) is not a part of mastodon, and neither groups as a feature. a.gup.pe are an independent organisation.

And like instance admins and mastodon itself, they rely on donations to pay the bills.

In fact, they have a co-op, which is cool!

See here for how you can join in and support them: opencollective.com/guppe-group

@dansup You can simplify the layout (there are three modes, with the simplest being a basic reverse chronological timeline).

All the dates and stuff are "widgets", of which there are more!, that are removed in the simplified view.

Calckey has a high degree of customisability it seems.

@dansup
Alt text or a link to the post would be good here given that it’s just text.

Basic alt text:

Screenshot of a mastodon post from the creator of mastodon showing that the post was made from the Ivory for iOS app.

@darius My suspicion at the moment is that this is the best way to use mastodon (once you've followed enough people that you like). Without some sort of sorting/filtering/searching/better lists to use to consume your timeline, relying merely on boosts and a chronological timeline is an awkward middle ground that just isn't ready/capable of providing.

I think this is a house/dinner party of a social media, not a replacement for twitter etc.

@darius thanks!

For the record, it seems to have the same issue as mastodon: attachments like links and images are stripped.

@darius

lemmy.ml/c/fediverse … is a “community” like a subreddit. Should be able to follow just fine like any other user. It should just like a group.

Thanks!

@darius @gersande maybe I can bother you @darius instead of @gersande (if you don’t mind!) … do you know how well hometown would render posts?

If you’re not sure or familiar, I think the main issue with Lemmy posts is that they pass links etc as attachments, which mastodon by default ignores.
