@Gargron do you also tell them that those number are most probably quite inaccurate by the nature of how the Fediverse works?

@dansup mine is a wild mix between German hiphop, multiple EDM subgenres mixed with some 80s synthpop and two metal songs. Idk what this really tells about me xD

@dansup another thing why phone numbers as a "spam protection" isn't a good idea: it's fucking expensive for the instance admin to do the SMS stuff and on the other hand it costs almost nothing to get yourself some phone numbers you could receive SMS on as spammer

@dansup I think the main concern that people have is if someone searches for "Mastodon" in the app stores the first app that pops up is the official one, which now uses some weird UX, so most people will also most likely land on mastodon.social. This is in turn bad for the decentralised nature of the network if one instance becomes the main power (for example in terms of moderation policies and what to tolerate or to not accept in the network)
