@darius @yerald @rose Cool. I might actually do a blog post on it, it's such a good example of how Mastodon's actual behavior undercuts the positioning of being designed to be resistant to harassment.

I assume that local-only posts wouldn't be included on the versions that are rendered when people (or search engine crawlers) aren't logged in? If so it's also a good example of the defense-in-depth value of local-only posts.

@darius well, i don't have any *moral* issues with it. if it takes longer than the lifetime of my machine, though, there might be some usability issues

@darius the times they are a-changing. From a visibility perspective, does that mean that posts by people who replied to your posts are discoverable from the search-indexed post?

I can see why it behaves the way it does but given the whole "mastodon doesn't provide text search because it would make people more vulnerable to harassment" messaging ... even now it violates the principle of least surprise.

@darius yeah, it's not obvious what to do. On youtube "unlisted" means "not discoverable by a search" so that is probably how. most people think of it.

One thing is for sure, they should be a lot more candid in the messaging. "We don't provide full-text search because it can be used for harassment" is a speedbump but not really a protection. It makes Mastodon seem safer than it really is, so missets people's expectations.

@darius yeah, I was just looking at the code and it seems like noindex is only set if it the original poster has opted not, it ignores whether any replies have.

So the "opt-out of search engine indexing" does not in fact opt you out of search engine indexing. Sad.

The description text is a little ambiguous but I agree that if you interpret the "post pages" in the description text as "your post pages" then it's technically correct.

@dansup I like the revised version in general but on the scond screen you might want to give some positive reasons for looking at other communities. @pixelfed
