@dansup What's the requirements to get listed?
Basically I would like to get listed, but there are maybe two pitfalls for me:
1) I plan to offer a cost plan for like € 1.-/GB/month.
2) I need a working LDAP setup. The current LDAP setup as outlined in https://docs.pixelfed.org/running-pixelfed/optional-features/ldap-authentication/ requires manual code changes. That's preventing me in deploying the service on https://pxlfed.de

@Gargron Yeah, it scales pretty well, at least on my side. Some other instances might have performance issues.
Over here it's like +1000 users or >50% more within the last 4 days, according to https://the-federation.info/node/nerdculture.de
Still room for more. CPUs are doing well, storage is ok, etc...
So, 👍 for the performance of Mastodon as a software! 🙂

@nateberkopec A running service is actually consuming resources, especially memory, that may be missing for other processes.
Alas, when you follow the "one host, one service" way, this wouldn't really apply to you, but for those that are running other services on the same host, it will.

@nateberkopec @onyxraven @getajobmike Scaling is not always a cloud thing, but sometimes a per-host thing. If the server is idle, it doesn't make sense to spawn n/2 processes when you have 32 vCores. It's a waste of resources.
If the queue size is increasing, then it might be a good idea to spawn new sidekiqs and bring the queue down - until it is down to a reasonable size.
Yes, that's more complex than just spawn n/2 processes and you'll need some kind of monitoring the sidekiq queue length. Maybe there is already something available.
For example, if you spawn a new sidekiq for every 2 or 5 minutes of backlog (until a upper limit of n processes is reached), then it would autoscale based on the queue length.
No need to invoke some cloud magic or provider or additional hardware.

@dansup what about using some kind of personas? You can configure in your settings which other services you use like Mastodon, Peertube, Wordpress, WriteFreely, etc. and then following a person would follow all accounts.

@dansup Uhm... first, you know my preference for LDAP backends. ;)
Second, I like the idea of having independent accounts that can be summarized into a „persona“ thing. So that you can follow a person/persona with all of their accounts or follow separate accounts
Third, supporting multiple auth backends would be nice, so local accounts and federated accounts, maybe via some sort of support for Keycloak federation or else.

@Mastodon Not happy about the new "onboarding experience". This could have been solved differently and not by collecting all the users and canibalizing the idea of the federation.
