@darius I had a look at this article just to check if he expressed surprise and dismay that the admins of the server could read his DMs and YUP, this genre of dork just cannot get over how weird and novel it is that server admins can read that stuff, while Bari Weiss is posting screenshots of internal Twitter moderation tooling with a "DIRECT MESSAGES" button on every profile

@darius I am so often a champion of “you can’t learn if you don’t ship” and “build safety, then experiment constantly” approaches, which really start to fall apart when your product is basically a giant psychometric challenge trial (with no IRB, of course) on the global population. But I still feel like “stop moving because moving might break something” is just as bad when the stakes are high as when they’re not. Constantly wondering how to resolve this tension.

@darius @tim re: my other reply, now I’m imagining casually mentioning to a startup’s gc that I’ve been regularly exporting my full work email archive to my personal laptop just in case they change the retention policy in a way I don’t like, or in case I want to share work comms as part of a subpoena I think might be justified, and watching them turn into a 100-meter tall rage dragon and incinerate me in a gout of white-hot flame

Please do not add genAI images to punch up your writing. You might think that it adds a nice little bit of visual pizazz to your content-marketing piece, but what you're actually doing is *making it look like content marketing* rather than a useful resource. To the extent that content marketing is an effective tactic, it is because you build trust with the customer by providing them valuable information. A genAI turd plopped on top of your writing is a signal that it will be worthless slop.

Was there ever a re-recording, or remix, or cover of Bowie’s “I’m afraid of Americans” where the chorus or the outro included the line “I’m afraid I’m an American”? I am having a real Berenstein Bears moment here

@darius no particular opinion on this choice but I do love learning new web UI convention terminology. kebab menu, meatball menu, hamburger menu, snackbar, carousel, breadcrumbs, accordion, bento menu, combo box, toast. I feel like I'm just perpetually on a boardwalk at some oceanside tourist trap

@darius in my mind this is the path that most git users follow, but the poll appears to be indicating that there's a big fork in the road, roughly 50/50. Everybody learns pull, and later when they learn fetch, about half of users switch.

Git fetch vs git pull: how did you develop your preference for one or the other? (If you use both, just pick the one you use more.) Do you just roll with the default from how you learned git, or did you learn both and make a conscious choice or change?
