@dansup yeah I’d prefer default-hidden but still available with a toggle.
Is there any hope of ever having data on how many *fediverse* follows a Threads account has?

@dansup go for it! You have every right to solicit fair compensation for your hard work.
Self-imposed poverty is in no way a part of the open source ethos. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to understand that the open source code we all love and appreciate will only keep coming as long as the people writing it are housed, fed and healthy.

@darius hope to see this trail of thought continue into real experimentation!
It feels like there would be a whole lot more common ground between the preemptive defederators and the wait-and-see crowd if dubious instances could be quarantined away whilst still having the option to poke holes for individually trusted users.
We also need more documentation on the connectivity options available to instance admins:

@dansup before they inevitably try to EEE our network (whether intentionally or just by nature of their size and cultural programming), we can EEE them instead!

@dansup p.s. rather than CP, the recommended terminology is CSAM: child sexual abuse materials.
https://rainn.org/news/what-child-sexual-abuse-material-csam
“While the term child pornography is still widely used by the public, it’s more accurate to call it what it is: evidence of child sexual abuse.
While some of the pornography online depicts adults who have consented to be filmed, that’s never the case when the images depict children.”

@feditips Important topic! I’ll try to write a blog response later to do it justice, but in short:
I support Mastodon’s move here. The risks you mention just aren’t the same with open source software.
If this change led to Mastodon having 100 million users this year, that’d still be a net positive for the fediverse and the open web, in spite of Mastodon’s non-ideal outsize influence.
At the slightest hint of bad practice on Mastodon’s end, we could switch clients, move, or fork.
