@feditips And pre-Musk Twitter had already rate limited the number of people that could use a third-party client app.

They initially allowed third-party clients in their growth stage. Then they saw Tweetdeck could be a threat by forking folks off into its own network. Bought it and changed the rules a couple of times to avoid another potential Tweetdeck down the line. Looks like Space Karen just locked the gate completely. (An API key is a key to a gate you don’t own.)

@Gargron @violetathena @NGIZero Thanks, Eugen.

That’s exactly the issue I’ve raised twice at the European Parliament now. That we need funding for organisations not features and we need it at the start, not after it’s impossible to ignore that something works and is being used (because not everyone can or should have to undertake the burden of getting to that point by themselves. Some of us do, but if we require that as a rite of passage we’re going to limit the potential for alternatives.)

@EU_Commission Jews fleeing Nazi Germany were turned away by countries in Europe and elsewhere. Today, we do the same thing to people fleeing wars and persecution in the Middle East. Does your pledge include welcoming refugees instead of enacting hostile policies not unlike the ones we had during WWII that compounded the suffering and devastation of victims? (Policies which, in some European countries, even criminalise people who aid refugees?)

@feditips And remember that your server admins are volunteers and most are paying out of their own pockets to host you. So remember to be kind and, if you can, donate to support the upkeep of the instance you’re on.

Twitter is a shopping mall, the fediverse is a park. It’s up to all of us to tend it together.

@Gargron Happy birthday, Eugen. (Are you sure you’re not stress testing your server?) ;)

@feditips Well, here’s hoping that’s true. Thing is, there are already very large instances and if a platform like Tumbler implements the protocol, it will – from one day to the next – eclipse even the largest one by an order or two of magnitude.

I believe vigilance is the order of the day… against corporate capture and vertical scale.

@EU_Commission What’s the law that states that if someone flaunts “maximum privacy and security”, the system will likely have neither?

@dansup That’s so kind of you to say, Dan. I don’t know about wise, I’m just a person trying my best to unlearn the toxic patriarchy we’re raised in and, in my own small way, build tools for the kind of world where I wouldn’t have had the privileges I had (because we’d all have them and they wouldn’t be privileges).

Similarly, though, your work is a huge inspiration and source of hope for me.

Here’s to decentring ourselves and creating a fairer, kinder, and more equitable world for us all 💕

Can’t believe it’s been 16 years since I organised the world’s first virtual web conference (it was called <head>, it took place over 3 days, had 4 simultaneous tracks, over 70 speakers, and local in-world conference hubs in London, Manchester, Brigthon, Fribourg, and San Francisco, as well as as pre-conference party and a separate virtual hub in Second Life).

@EU_Commission I can’t believe I’m saying this but good job – especially “pay or consent” has to be nipped in the bud before it takes hold; it’s basically data extortion.

(And thank you for sharing the news without some silly meme attempt.)

@dansup @pixelfed Oh but I thought Meta were our friends now. Isn’t that what the Mastodon folks are saying? 🤔
