@darius ah okay I get it. I was thinking in federated terms, maybe a notification comes from a server (like dolphin.town) and the server could suggest a sound to be used.

But it makes much more sense as a local web interface thing.

@65dBnoise true.

The "spot interesting subjects" part is going to be a neat bit of work, which I know folks are already working on.

@darius is that something the server can advertise, or something each user has to choose?

@65dBnoise I've definitely heard of other planned missions where the raw data would overwhelm any existing downlink, so the spacecraft has to be smart enough to filter out relevant data. still makes my skin crawl though; especially with astronomical data, it seems like you never know all the questions to ask about your data when you gather it

@65dBnoise I would've sworn a precursor system was used on MER occasionally, but I don't want to go back through all of marsandme.blogspot.com right now

@65dBnoise there was also a paper I'm trying to recall, "Overview of the Mars Exploration Rovers’ Autonomous Mobility and Vision Capabilities," but I can't find a copy online anymore. I think it was mostly a navigation capability that could be science-coopted, obvs. a lot more rudimentary than what the new rovers are capable of.

@65dBnoise for reasons beyond me, I can play around in VR for hours and not have problems until the framerate is a slideshow. I also got instrument certified for flying aircraft, so I trained not to trust a lot of my motion and balance cues without verification. Seasickness will get me every time though.
