@darius OK I have a follow up question:
I think it's confusing to start a mention only post to a user who is not local they can't see it.
Is there a way to switch the behavior there so mention only posts are public by default even if the main default is local only?

@darius oh I should have been more clear!
I want a way for users who have default set to local only to post public on a case by case basis (because I local only for all users by default)
Eg if there could be an emoji colon public colon which pushes the federation switch for users using an iOS client (other than Tusker)

@darius unsolicited advice: I have found that adding a glass screen protector substantially improves iPhone touchscreen ability to function in the sho^h^h^h under misty work conditions.

@dansup once per 24h would definitely fail for me for reasons relating to the way embedded browsers in email clients frequently lose state and password managers are not 100% reliable.
I almost always end up requesting 2-3 resets in a row.
